The seedbed where tobacco is germinated before it goes to the field, traditionally a raised, sterilized bed under cloth and now often float trays in shallow water. Seedlings spend roughly six to eight weeks there.

Nearly every disease problem that shows up later can be seeded here, so growers sterilize soil and cull weak plants aggressively before transplanting.
