Camacho

Simon Camacho, a Cuban exile, established the brand in the early 1960s. After his death the name lapsed until the Eiroa family bought it in 1995 and rebuilt it around their Honduran farming operation in the Jamastran valley near Danli. Their decision to grow original Cuban-seed corojo, a variety most growers had abandoned as difficult and disease-prone, gave Camacho Corojo a distinct identity in the early 2000s.

Oettinger Davidoff acquired the company and its Honduran factory in 2008, while the Eiroas retained their tobacco fields and later launched separate ventures. Under Davidoff ownership the brand was repositioned in 2013 with new packaging and a portfolio built around Corojo, Connecticut, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Triple Maduro and American Barrel-Aged blends. The Eiroas later launched separate companies of their own, drawing on the Honduran tobacco they had retained after the sale.

Camacho remains a Honduran-centred brand within a Swiss-owned group and is a useful example of how a small exile-founded label can pass through two very different ownerships. Published accounts give both 1961 and 1962 for the original founding, so the date here is recorded as reported. The brand's Honduran identity, unusual in a market dominated by Nicaraguan and Dominican production, remains its main point of difference.
