Corojo

A Cuban variety developed in the mid twentieth century at the El Corojo vega in Pinar del Rio and grown under shade as Cuba's standard wrapper for decades. Extreme susceptibility to blue mold and black shank pushed Cuba to retire it in favor of hybrids in the 1990s.

Corojo descendants grown in Honduras and Nicaragua give the spicy, reddish, sun-grown wrappers many smokers associate with the name, which is not the same plant Cuba once shaded.
