Villa Gonzalez

The most robust of the Dominican filler zones: dry earth, walnut, black tea and a firmer peppery finish than the softer Cibao ground gives. It still sits well short of Esteli in strength, but it supplies the structure that keeps a Dominican blend from going flat. The leaf takes fermentation well and rests into a rounder, cocoa-inflected profile after a couple of years in bale.

Middle primings dominate the useful crop and are the standard binder material. The upper leaf carries enough weight to serve as a Dominican ligero substitute in blends that avoid Nicaraguan leaf.

Fertile clay-loam on the western edge of the Cibao plain, slightly heavier and better drained than the valley floor around Santiago. The extra clay gives a thicker leaf with more body.

Warm year-round with moderate rainfall and a slightly drier profile than the eastern Cibao, which shortens curing time and reduces mold pressure in the barn.

The town sits in the heart of the traditional Dominican tobacco belt and has supplied leaf to Santiago's factories since long before the modern premium boom. Several long-established grower families still farm the same parcels.

Stable, though acreage is under slow pressure from residential and commercial expansion out of Santiago.
