Ash-Tapping Etiquette

The convention of letting ash build and then rolling or gently tapping it off into an ashtray rather than striking the cigar sharply. Common practice is to let roughly an inch accumulate before removing it.

Sharp tapping cracks the burning coal and can drop hot ash on clothing or furniture, while a gentle roll on the tray edge takes it off cleanly.
