Industry & TradeSpanish
Definition
The reader who sits above the rolling floor and reads aloud to the workers, traditionally newspapers in the morning and novels in the afternoon. The practice began in Cuban factories in the 1860s and continues in some of them.
Why it matters
The lector is the origin of several famous cigar names taken from books read on the floor, and the tradition is a genuine piece of labor history rather than a marketing invention.
In context
"The lector was working through a novel, and the galera listened while they rolled."
