Growing & TerroirCuban Spanish
Definition
The westernmost tobacco zone of Cuba's Pinar del Rio province, centered on San Juan y Martinez and San Luis. Its sandy, iron-rich soils and reliable dry season make it the only Cuban region that produces all leaf classes, wrapper included, at the top grade.
Why it matters
Essentially every premium Habano draws on Vuelta Abajo leaf, and the region's small size is a permanent ceiling on Cuban production.
In context
"Ask where the wrapper came from and the answer, for any serious Habano, is Vuelta Abajo."
