Rustic and forward: damp earth, black coffee grounds, sour cherry and a raw peppery kick that arrives early and stays. There is very little of the cedar sweetness that marks western Cuban leaf. It burns fast and hot with a loose grey ash, so blends built on it need a disciplined binder to slow them down. Smokers who like the style describe it as honest and agricultural; those who do not call it harsh, and both are describing the same leaf.

The upper primings are genuinely strong and take a long fermentation to become smokable. Lower and middle leaf is the more useful material, giving volume and burn without the sharpest edges.

Mixed sandy-clay soils across the central plain, generally more fertile and less mineral than the Pinar del Rio ground. The result is a thicker, tougher leaf with more body and less finesse.

Hotter and wetter than western Cuba, with a less reliable dry season. Growers here contend with more disease pressure and a shorter usable window for good curing weather.

Tobacco has been grown around Remedios and Cabaiguan since the seventeenth century, making it one of the oldest continuously cultivated zones on the island. It has long been the source for Cuba's value-priced and machine-bunched cigars rather than for the export marcas.

Stable, with steady acreage supporting domestic consumption and the lower tiers of the export range.
