Oriente

Growing & TerroirCuban Spanish
Definition
The traditional name for eastern Cuba, where tobacco is grown on a modest scale in the provinces around Santiago and Holguin. The leaf is generally strong and rustic and is used domestically rather than in export Habanos.
Why it matters
The region shows up in cigar history more than in cigar blends, and any claim that a premium Habano is built on Oriente leaf deserves scrutiny.
In context
"Oriente tobacco largely feeds the local market rather than the export factories."
