Tabacalera Perdomo
Perdomo's Esteli plant, about eighty-eight thousand square feet and known locally as El Monstro, one of the largest cigar facilities in Nicaragua.
Perdomo built a permanent Esteli factory at the end of the 1990s after outgrowing an earlier facility, and the plant has since expanded to roughly eighty-eight thousand square feet. Its local nickname, El Monstro, reflects its scale; it is generally described as the second-largest cigar-making facility in the country. The site has been expanded several times since it was first built, and the company has continued to add capacity as its lines have grown.
What distinguishes the operation is the breadth of what happens on site. In addition to rolling, Perdomo runs its own fermentation, aging and finishing, and operates box-making and printing capacity rather than buying packaging in. The company also farms in Nicaragua, giving it control over a wider share of its inputs than most manufacturers of comparable size. Few premium manufacturers of comparable scale attempt that.
The plant produces the full Perdomo range, including the anniversary series, the Double-Aged 12 Year Vintage blends and the bourbon-barrel-aged lines, and handles third-party production. The control over packaging is particularly unusual, since boxes and printing are normally bought from outside suppliers in both Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.
