Bale Aging

Production & CuringEnglish
Definition
Holding fermented leaf in tercios for an extended period, from months to many years, in a warehouse kept at controlled humidity. Chemical change continues slowly, without the heat of active fermentation, and bales are periodically opened and inspected.
Why it matters
Bale age is what smooths a blend before it is ever rolled, and long inventories are a real, expensive competitive advantage for established makers.
In context
"That ligero had five years in the bale before it went into the blend."
