Tobacco & LeafCuban Spanish
Definition
A Cuban selection released in the late 1990s by the island's tobacco research institute to restore criollo character with better disease resistance, particularly to blue mold. It is grown in the sun for filler and binder and has been widely adopted outside Cuba.
Why it matters
Criollo 98 is a workhorse in Nicaragua and Honduras, and blenders reach for it when they want classic Cuban-style filler that will actually survive a wet season.
In context
"Their Esteli filler is Criollo 98, which explains the pepper on the retrohale."
