Illusione
Dion Giolito's brand, built on Aganorsa-grown Nicaraguan leaf and among the first of the boutique labels to trade on named tobacco sourcing.
Dion Giolito, a tobacconist based in Reno, Nevada, created Illusione in the mid-2000s. The brand's early identity rested on two things: unusually specific claims about the tobacco used, drawn from Aganorsa's Nicaraguan farms, and an occult-tinged design language of numbers and symbols that gave the Original Documents line its cryptic names, among them 68, 88, 888, mk and hl. The brand is independent and remains owned by its founder.
Cigars are made in Esteli at the Aganorsa-owned TABSA factory, and the connection to a single grower has remained central to how the brand is described. Later families widened the range considerably: Epernay uses a lighter Nicaraguan blend, Fume d'Amour is drawn from aged leaf, and Rothchildes is a lower-priced line using Connecticut broadleaf. Most of the Original Documents blends are Nicaraguan puros, and naming a grower was unusual when the brand launched.
Illusione has stayed independent and comparatively small, with distribution concentrated among specialist retailers. Founding-year accounts vary between 2006 and 2007 depending on whether the first blending work or the first shipment is counted, so this record is marked reported. Giolito has also run a retail business, and the company continues to release formats that larger manufacturers consider commercially marginal, which keeps output small and distribution concentrated among specialist shops.
